Teach beauty: anatomical courses for cosmetologists in the heart of Europe

Cosmetology, Europe, Medicine

For four years, the company Medical Esthetic has been organizing anatomical or cadaver courses for cosmetologists at the Anatomical Theater of Charles University in Prague. About them told the head of the company Medical Esthetic Natalia Markova.
What are anatomical courses for doctors? Are they not enough long years of study and existing practice?

Natalia Markova: At the university, teaching is general. Future doctors, of course, study the anatomy of the human body and face. But the anatomy of the face is not studied in such detail, without taking into account new discoveries in cosmetology in the field of injections and implantations. When you study anatomy on biological material, see and feel all the layers of your face and neck under your arms, you perceive the living patient in a completely different way. You will learn about the anatomical structures of which there are a great many. You warn of possible complications, because you rely not only on your experience, but also on specific knowledge aimed at the manipulations that the cosmetologist conducts. You understand what's under the skin. This feeling gives the doctor confidence and makes the procedure safer for patients. The doctor who has completed anatomical courses becomes a specialist in his field, a cut above the rest.

- How did you get the idea of organizing anatomical courses?

- The idea of organizing anatomical courses came to me and Olga Zhukova (Associate Professor at the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases of the Russian Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow) during one of our trainings on the thread lifting Aptos in 2014. We then just complained that our fingers were not able to see all the subcutaneous layers and regretted that at the end of the needle there was no light bulb and video camera. They remembered about the instrument of surgeons - a pawscope, which could show us in which layer we implant a thread or filler and what generally happens under our skin. In general, lamented that a beautician - not an x-ray. And here one of our colleagues says: why did you study so poorly in the anatomist ?! And we thought that we were doing well: we went to the anatomical laboratories, we performed dissections. But when you study for a general specialty, then you don’t focus so much on the anatomy of the face, you get general knowledge about the treatment of the disease. And aesthetics is not a cure for the disease, a healthy person comes to you in general for some specific procedure. Thus was born the idea of training cosmetologists in techniques of working with “dangerous” facial zones on anatomical courses, which we now conduct in Prague six times a year.

- Who comes to anatomical courses in Prague?

- Mostly experienced doctors who have already achieved something in their profession. Successful people, the level of which I would characterize as advanced, but they still have questions about the anatomy of the injection, the implantation of the filaments. Beginners, just graduated from the university, we had only two courses. For them we organize separate groups. In order for them to appreciate the opportunities offered by the anatomical course, they must first gain experience with live injections. They themselves do not know how to, and how wrong. So go mostly experienced doctors.

- Cadaver courses for cosmetologists are now held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Munich, Amsterdam, and now in Prague. Why did it become so popular?

- Cosmetology as a professional industry is developing with great speed. This is clearly seen in congresses of aesthetic medicine. At each such conference, there are some discoveries. In order to keep up with constant updates cosmetologists need to improve in the profession. Therefore, dissection courses are now in demand. Nobody pays their doctors. It is always the doctor’s own desire to improve, develop in his profession.

- Where are your anatomical courses?

- We conduct them on the basis of Charles University. It is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in 1348 by Charles IV, the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and then there were only four faculties: law, theology, philosophy, and medicine. Now there are 17 faculties at Charles University, and there are as many as three medical ones. So this is a major educational institution with a long tradition. Anatomical Institute was built in the nineteenth century, in 1893. It is still kept intact, except for modernization: there are magnificent, functional and washable work surfaces, a well-thought-out air-conditioning system with glaciers, and several underground floors. Previously, we carried out dissections in historical anatomical halls, but now we have a laboratory equipped with the latest technology in the same building. The Anatomical Institute in Prague has a pleasant atmosphere and amazing cleanliness compared to other laboratories. Even the Anatomical Institute in France loses in this matter.

- How are cadaver courses in Prague different from other similar ones?

- The difference between our anatomical courses is the availability and openness to all knowledge. We study in the format of live communication between doctors and speakers, our students have the same opportunity to express themselves as teachers have. This is a platform for sharing experiences. Our task is to provide each student with the opportunity to learn new manual skills that will later become his habit. We do not think when we drive a car, it happens at the level of instincts. So the beautician, conducting an injection, must instinctively feel the layers, the vessels, the skill should be familiar to him. We have an international team, and we also conduct training courses for Russian and foreign doctors in Russian and English.

- Is there a difference between the Russian and Western approach to the provision of cosmetic procedures?

- For us, a cosmetic procedure is primarily a correction of anatomical data or age-related changes. Our western colleagues pay more attention to natural beauty. In the West, people regularly go to a beautician for treatments, biorevitalisation and mesotherapy. Therefore, Western doctors are interested in our methods of lip and cheekbone correction, and our doctors are interested in their more “natural” approach.

- How often do foreign specialists participate in the Anatomic Course? What causes them the most interest?

We conduct English-language courses once or twice a year. The greatest interest among foreign doctors is our experience with the use of collagen stimulants, the implantation of threads, especially Aptos threads. These are products that, when implanted into tissues with special bio-reinforcing techniques, stimulate the production of skin's own collagen, prevent ptosis. A framework is formed in the skin that strengthens the skin and visually thickens it. The skin ceases to be flabby. In Russia, Asia and America, these are common methods, and for Europe this is a new direction, here collagen stimulants are less common: they were not understood in due time.

- What is the most important feedback for you from these courses?

- For me, the most important thing is when doctors say that they are applying new techniques in practice, and their patients are satisfied. Especially, if people come back to us, and we, especially for them, conduct repeated courses. This is a separate format with a completely different program. The "repeaters" have less time to practice their own skills, but more time is spent on dissection. And now, for the third year, we have been holding a Round Table with the participation of our graduates.
