An asteroid with a diameter of 110 m flew past Earth
Asteroid 2018 GE3 flew past the Earth, the width of which, according to preliminary calculations, was from 48 to 110 meters.
The distance to our planet was 192 thousand kilometers, this is half that of the moon.
The object approached our planet on April 15, and astronomers were able to detect the celestial body less than a day before. This asteroid is three to six times larger than the Chelyabinsk meteorite that fell to Earth on February 15, 2013. Recall, then, several buildings were destroyed, in many homes glass was raised, including because of this injury of varying severity was received by more than 1,5 thousand people.
If 2018 GE3 fell to Earth, it would cause regional rather than global damage, calmed astronomers. In addition, the heavenly body could collapse in the atmosphere.
Nevertheless, this case showed that even such large celestial bodies (comparable to the legendary Tunguska meteorite, whose size can be estimated by the scale of the consequences of the fall) are still a surprise for scientists who are not yet able to predict a possible collision in advance.
