Svetlana Larkina: "The future is for biotechnology"

Cosmetology, EU, Medicine

In our ever-changing world, the field of aesthetic medicine is developing especially rapidly. Every day there are new cosmetic methods and their combinations. Svetlana Larkina, the chief physician of the Center for Intensive Cosmetology and Anti-Age Therapy, told our media, how to remain a sought-after doctor.
Some marketers believe that it makes no sense today for aesthetic medicine specialists to try to cover all existing methods. The industry is developing so fast that it is better to focus on one thing. Do you agree with that?

In order to correctly draw up a treatment program for a patient, the aesthetic profile physician is simply obliged to know about all the techniques. Today we practically never work with monomethodics. Therefore, knowledge is required. Another thing is that you do not need to try to do everything yourself. The ideal option, when in the team clinic, each doctor has his own focus. Someone more often uses hardware techniques, someone specializes in injection techniques or thread lifting. And this we are talking about now only about the face, I don’t even touch on other zones. There are still numerous procedures on the body, aesthetic gynecology is now in great demand.

And what to do when there is no doctor of the desired profile?

It is illogical to try to cover the entire market. From the point of view of marketing, each clinic has its own niche. For example, our clinic in Odessa specializes mainly in the face. We are engaged in body shaping, but we practice a more comprehensive approach with the advice of a nutritionist and an endocrinologist. So, when we do not have the necessary devices, I just send patients to colleagues, even to competitors sometimes.

The beginning doctor, as a rule, tries to do everything at once, only with time he understands what he is stronger at. Working as a coach or speaker in some company, a doctor will inevitably develop more in this topic. In general, I think that every doctor should try himself as a speaker.

For what?

When the doctor prepares a presentation, he delves into the material, studies the topic and then tries to present it as widely as possible. And this is a very useful practice. He then needs to explain the essence of the procedure to the patient. In our clinic, all doctors from time to time prepare small presentations for employees. As a result, even nurses are inspired by cosmetology innovations.

According to statistics, almost half of all aesthetic activities for the correction of appearance today falls on minimally invasive technology. They even switched plastic surgeons. Is this a temporary phenomenon, or will it continue?

When there is a pronounced excess of skin, then I will send the patient to the surgeon. And if the surgeon suggests that my patient be given an injection, in no case will I discourage him. Botulinum toxin injections are sometimes done before plastic surgery, and this is justified. When correcting age-related changes, a combination of plastic surgery and a threadlift is ideal. Speech on the endoscopic lifting of the upper third of the face. When the surgeon has already made incisions, through these accesses you can go into the middle third and make a thread lifting with fixation.

This is the best way, besides we minimize injury. So the ideal option is to be friends with the surgeon. There are patients who do not need radical measures, while others, on the contrary, show surgery. So we will always intervene in each other's areas. Another question is whether the legal framework will help regulate this relationship. In our country (Ukraine) there is no such legislative delegation as to who and what has the right to do. Most likely, we will come to this, as a result, and then it will be a struggle of medical unions.

Perhaps, the patients themselves prefer less traumatic methods of appearance correction and prefer cosmetic methods?

In fact, the patient does not immediately go to the plastic surgeon. And it is - the duty of the doctor to send it. Some patients I persuade for 5-10 years to make blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids. But the degree of demand for cosmetic procedures is indeed high, and in both women and men lately.

Do men also go to cosmetologists?

Yes, we in our clinic even conducted a small study on this matter. Men today account for 35% of the total number of our patients. As a rule, they begin to take care of their appearance after 35-40 years. Their lead wife and girlfriend. Moreover, it is of fundamental importance for men that after the procedure there should be a minimum of injuries and marks, and they are ready to repeat it no more than once a year. Just the duration of active life of men has increased, some dads become only 45 years old, and even 70.

What direction, aesthetic medicine technique itself seems to you the most promising?

The future is in biotechnology and regenerative techniques. Now it is this that is actively being discussed, but there is a lack of a scientific-evidence and legislative base, and compliance with ethical standards is required.

However, minimally invasive technology so firmly won their place, that they will not leave the market. With the advent of injection techniques, it is quite difficult to distinguish a 25-year-old patient from a 35-year-old. Changed the timing of determining the average and elderly ages. There is a mass of preventive injections that prevent the formation of mimic wrinkles, eyebrow ptosis or lower third of the face. Therefore, the timing of treatment to plastic surgeons are significantly shifted.

What do cosmetologists need to do to stay in demand today?

It is necessary to attend at least one or two major congresses per year, which cover several areas of aesthetic medicine. And without cadaver courses, without good knowledge of anatomy, it is impossible to effectively use minimally invasive techniques in practice, because we work on anatomical guidelines. Only after dissecting anatomical courses do you begin to understand at what level of soft tissue you work. You can enter a colored gel and see how correctly you injected the drug, which allows you to learn a new technique.

This summer you take part in the Round Table “Actual Issues of Modern Cosmetology” from Medical Esthetic in Prague. What is the task of such events?

In their practice, doctors use their favorite techniques, modify existing standard treatment protocols. So at such conferences, we exchange experiences, and most importantly, we share complications. In our profession it is best to learn from someone else’s experience.
